Artist’s note:
A young figure sits with knees pulled toward the chest on a ground of plain brown paper, stripped of any setting or scene. The empty space around the body is doing the work; there is nowhere to look except at the person and the exhaustion being carried. Despondency is not a story so much as a condition after the story failed to arrive. The drawing uses very little ink, as though even the image is conserving energy. Nothing is coming to fill the rest of the page.
