Artist’s note:
A girl sits on a horned animal against a pale sky and a grey, broken-looking sea, pointing outward beyond the frame. The animal is not quite mount, pet, idol, or witness, which leaves it doing all four jobs at once. Baphomet is full of these small authorities: children who point, animals that wait, rituals that pretend to be games. The girl’s pink face and the animal’s green body sit awkwardly against the washed shoreline behind them. She has seen something. Naturally, we have not.
